The size of a roll of carpet varies according to its availability with the most common length being 12 feet. But if you need it for commercial purposes you can probably special order 6 foot carpets. The standard setup for these sizes are shown in the diagram below. On stairs i recommend a carpet pile height of 1 2 or less and a carpet padding thickness of 7 16 or less and a pile density rating of at least 8 pounds.

If you want your carpet to last longer i recommend a carpet pile height of less the 3 4. Other fixed widths include 13 feet 6 inches and 15 inches depending on the manufacturer. Standard carpet width most manufacturers in the us make three carpet sizes for residential purposes. Standard lengths of carpet rolls also include 15 feet and 13 1 2 feet.

Unlike the width manufacturers can cut the length of the carpet to whatever you need. Keep in mind that they may vary by several inches either bigger or smaller. Notice the standard setup has most if not all furniture legs on the rug.
